In commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day 2026, Preventive Healthcare Initiative and partners implemented a series of activities aimed at raising awareness, promoting prevention, improving access to genotype screening, supporting people living with sickle cell disease, and advocating for equitable healthcare services.
The activities were implemented under the organisation’s Youth Against Sickle Cell Project, an adolescent and young adult advocacy, awareness, screening, and support initiative designed to reduce the burden of sickle cell disease through preventive education and early intervention.
The commemoration commenced on 19 June 2026 with support for children, adolescents, and young adults living with sickle cell disease during the Paediatric–Transition Sensitisation Programme organised by Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. Preventive Healthcare Initiative donated essential routine medications, including Hydroxyurea capsules, analgesics, folic acid, Vitamin B Complex, and Vitamin C, to support participants receiving comprehensive sickle cell care.
As part of the commemoration, Preventive Healthcare Initiative also organised sickle cell awareness seminars and free genotype screening exercises at Niger Delta Science School and Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic. These activities reached hundreds of adolescents and young adults through health education, participant engagement, counselling, distribution of educational materials, and free genotype screening.
Overall, the programme increased awareness of sickle cell disease, promoted informed reproductive health decisions, encouraged genotype testing, reduced misconceptions surrounding the disease, and strengthened advocacy for equitable access to prevention and care.
Background
Sickle cell disease remains one of Nigeria’s most significant public health challenges. Nigeria carries the highest global burden of sickle cell disease, with thousands of babies born annually with the condition.
Despite improvements in diagnosis and treatment, many challenges persist. These include limited public awareness and health education, poor access to genotype screening services, delayed diagnosis and intervention, cultural misconceptions and stigma, limited access to comprehensive care, and poor knowledge of genotype compatibility before marriage.
Many young Nigerians still enter adulthood without knowing their genotype, resulting in preventable births of children with sickle cell disease and avoidable health complications.
Project Response
Recognising these challenges, Preventive Healthcare Initiative established the Youth Against Sickle Cell Project, a preventive health programme that integrates advocacy, awareness creation, education, genotype screening, counselling, and linkage to care.
The project aligns with national and global efforts to reduce the burden of sickle cell disease through health equity, youth empowerment, and preventive healthcare.

Activities Implemented
1Support for Persons Living with Sickle Cell Disease
The World Sickle Cell Day activities commenced with participation in the Paediatric–Transition Sensitisation Programme organised by Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. The programme brought together children living with sickle cell disease, adolescents, young adults, parents and caregivers, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.
As part of its contribution, Preventive Healthcare Initiative donated essential medications, including Hydroxyurea capsules, analgesics, folic acid, Vitamin B Complex, and Vitamin C. These medications supported routine care for individuals living with sickle cell disease and reinforced the organisation’s commitment to improving quality of life through practical support.
2Community Awareness Walk
A public awareness walk was organised to commemorate World Sickle Cell Day. Volunteers carried awareness placards and engaged members of the public on the importance of knowing one’s genotype, preventing sickle cell disease, early diagnosis, and ending stigma. The walk generated significant public interest and served as an effective platform for community education.
3Sickle Cell Awareness Seminar at Niger Delta Science School
Preventive Healthcare Initiative organised an interactive educational seminar titled Understanding Sickle Cell Disease. The seminar helped secondary school students understand what sickle cell disease is, how it is inherited, the importance of genotype testing, prevention strategies, living positively with sickle cell disease, and the need to combat myths and stigma.
Students actively participated throughout the session, demonstrating enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn more about sickle cell disease.
4Awareness Seminar and Free Genotype Screening at Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic
A comprehensive awareness programme was conducted for students and staff of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic. Activities included health education, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, participant testimonies, distribution of information, education and communication materials, individual counselling, and free genotype screening.
Participants demonstrated excellent engagement by asking insightful questions relating to genotype compatibility, marriage decisions, family planning, living with sickle cell disease, and available treatment options. The free genotype screening enabled many participants to know their genotype for the first time and receive appropriate counselling.

Following the seminar, the participant took advantage of the free genotype screening service, learned their genotype for the first time, and encouraged several friends to also get tested.
This experience illustrates the transformative value of combining health education with accessible screening services.
