What is Anaemia?
Anaemia simply means shortage or lack of blood
Anaemia is a condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or a lower-than-normal haemoglobin concentration, leading to an inadequate supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues.
Causes of Anaemia During Pregnancy
Several factors contribute to anaemia in pregnancy, including:
- Iron Deficiency: Increased nutritional demands during pregnancy and inadequate dietary intake of iron-rich foods can lead to iron deficiency anaemia.
- Poor Nutrition: Diets lacking in folic acid, vitamin B12, and other essential nutrients also contribute to anaemia.
- Cultural Taboos: In some communities, pregnant women are discouraged from consuming protein-rich foods such as eggs and meat due to traditional beliefs, further increasing their risk of anaemia.
